Self Acknowledgement

Growing up in the UK, this time of year always reminds me of the Harvest Festival. Around the end of Summer, we celebrated the Harvest Festival at school by filling the assembly room with decorations of corn, sheaves of wheat, vegetables and fruits, and every student made a contribution (no matter how small, and often in the form of canned goods!) to be shared in the community. This festival was a celebration of all the hard work dedicated to having an abundance of resources to last through the Winter months. Living in NC, I am reminded of this every year when I see the piles of pumpkins and colourful decorations that celebrate the reaping of these bountiful vegetables.
For me, a feeling of nostalgia comes during this season when another year is drawing to a close. My body seems to gravitate towards slowing down. This is a a great opportunity to reflect upon our accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem, and allow ourselves some recognition for these tasks completed, obstacles overcome, goals achieved. Sometimes this is easier said than done; we may struggle to allow ourselves any recognition for our accomplishments, or simply not be in the habit of congratulating ourselves, even if we can easily see and compliment other people on the efforts they have made. I know self-acknowledgement is something I have to work at!
This year, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone of familiarity and rose to the challenge of trying to learn new things, and put them into practice. It felt vulnerable and sticky, and sometimes hopeless! When I look back over the hours and weeks committed to this, and the progress I have made, I feel a warm glow around my heart and a naturally deepening breath. There’s a sense of softening and relaxation in my body, and even a sparkle of excitement and hope that new challenges will reap great pumpkin piles! That feeling of having reached the pinnacle of an uphill hike.
I encourage you to try this practice of self-acknowledgement. It can look different for everyone, because what one person finds easy, another person might find challenging, and vice-versa. Maybe you overcame nerves to go to the dentist. Maybe you set and upheld some newly defined personal boundaries. Maybe you created new life! Maybe you worked hard doing a job you find difficult, to support the family you love.
Whatever your accomplishments from this year, see how it feels to recognise your efforts, and sense into whatever this experience of self-recognition is like for you! Happy Harvesting!

This is beautiful Sarah! That you for the reminder and encouragement. Thank you for sharing a piece of yourself and your heart with us all.
Beautiful story.
Thank you for sharing! Love your point of view and experience. So true the inner critic can sometimes steal the show when there is so much to acknowledge in the ways we grow and evolve.
Thank you for sharing that bit of your culture with us. I already can’t wait for November’s edition! Keep up the brilliant work, dear! Happy Harvesting 💖
